I guess now that Paramount has opted back in to the Blu-ray business, they intend to do it right.

Recently Paramount launched this support website, promoting their Blu-ray releases as well as featured news about Blu-ray including player news.

The video player appears to be not quite ready - will be interesting to see what video content they add!

Great to see that Paramount is taking this all very seriously.

Since they plateaued three years ago, DVD sales have slowly decreased. The first quarter of this year was no different, showing an overall drop in DVD sales of 1.2% from Q1 2007. However, Blu-ray sales saved the day - just as studios have hoped they would - and when combined with DVD sales resulted in an overall increase in sales of 1% over last year.

Still waiting on that promised ability to transfer Blu-Ray's from a PS3 to a PSP. In the meantime, I'm going to point out something you're never going to buy, and a situation you'll most likely never find yourself in, but is interesting nonetheless. At least on a trivial level. Above is Sony's BDZ-A70 Blu-Ray recorder, which lets you watch TV, then record that TV onto a Blu-Ray disc. And also a PSP. People love firmware updates on the PS3. Why? They continue to add new functionality. While the most-requested feature, in-game XMB, still has not arrived, the latest update (2.20) included a number of new features, such as support for BD-Live, the latest Blu-ray disc profile. The interview notes that the PS3 is much more powerful than standalone Blu-ray players on the market, and that the "performance gap" won’t get smaller any time soon. Because of this, Blu-ray discs can differentiate ...

In the run-up to Christmas, the fight between Blu-ray and HD DVD is being fought largely by retailers. Finally we're seeing a broader selection of high-def disc players, and that's driving down prices.

The question is this: is now the right time to buy a high-def disc player?

Buying into Blu-ray

Blu-ray is certainly the more expensive of the two competing formats. The almost blanket lack of BD Profile 1.1-compliance hasn't affected online prices too much either. Sony's debut BDP-S1E ...

Just when you thought 50GB of data storage was enough, Hitachi has to waltz in and offer double that amount with a new prototype four layer Blu-ray disc. Normally, you'd need a different optical head to read from a disc of this type, but that doesn't seem to be the case with this one. That is, if need be, Hitachi says it will play in regular Blu-ray drives that exist now (which includes our lovely PS3).

Well, there is a catch. All Blu-ray players would have to have their optical heads ...

Sales figures of Blu-ray movies in Europe have slowly been on a steady rise. Just recently, the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) announced that their disc format's sales has surpassed HD-DVD titles by a 4-to-1 ratio... which means, for every HD-DVD title sold, four other Blu-ray titles are purchased. This announcement also comes with the revelation of stand alone Blu-ray players also catching up to the HD-DVD players in sales.

The current sales figures of Blu-ray movies has now made other ...

It's been described as a "key milestone" in the Blu-ray Disc's strategic roadmap. Recent news that Infodisc has come online as Europe's first independent Blu-ray disc manufacturer may be shrugged off as dull industry blurb by those not realising the implications of this development.

It is in fact very significant, and in time, will have an effect on the consumer, as well as possibly the entire format war on our continent. This news means that the Blu-ray disc market in Europe ...

US, September 21, 2007 - The DVD Copy Control Association has reportedly finalized an agreement with Hollywood studios, technology manufacturers, and the DVD licensing group that will allow for the development of download-to-DVD movie purchase services. Though the concept of allowing consumers to download a movie file and then burn it to DVD has been around for a while, fears of piracy have led most controlling parties to drag their feet on the option for years.

According to Time Warner, 300 has quickly become the fastest selling high-def movie of all time, shifting more than a quarter million copies since its release a little over a week ago. The Spartan epic, easily outpaced The Departed and Casino Royale which both took a couple months to hit just 100,000 sold.

When broken down between format types, 65% of consumers picked up 300 on Blu-ray, while 300 on HD-DVD accounted for only 35% of the sales. According to the USA Today article, this ...

Following Target's announcement that they will be supporting Blu-ray, BJ's Wholesale Cub will be carrying Blu-ray discs exclusively, dropping HD-DVD support from its shelves by Q4 of this year. It's clear that Sony's proprietary HD movie format is gaining strong retail support in this format war.

If Blu-ray becomes the dominant HD movie format, people may be more inclined to see the value of PS3's inclusion of Blu-ray support. Certainly, PS2's support of the then-fledgling DVD format ...

Many companies have been gearing towards Blu-ray lately, but Paramount will be doing it with greater justification.

Paramount Home Entertainment will be shipping several Blu-ray disc movies that will offer more bang for the buck than the version available on HD-DVD.

Blades of Glory will be the first movie the company ships that offers more on Blu-ray. The movie will feature the lossless, or uncompressed, soundtrack of the movie with a PCM 5.1 soundtrack. Of course the movie will be ...
